Education
As they began raising these children sent to them by the Lord, the Smiths found that the level of schooling the children were receiving was extremely poor. Most were barely able to read or write despite years in the school system. The ministry subsequently began a primary school that is now accredited.
Background
Guyana is the only English-speaking country in South America. It is one of the poorer countries in the Western Hemisphere, with one third of the population living below the poverty line. Many skilled workers have emigrated, leaving the country at a disadvantage. Broken families, increased substance abuse, and rising HIV/AIDS rates, are leaving more and more children in desperate situations.
